It didn't matter. It didn't matter that they'd fought. That they'd tried to compromise. None of that changed the way he'd catch Jack smiling now and then as the other man thought about his thrilling adventure. It didn't change the fact that while Jack had been off playing the hero and having adventures, he'd been home. He hadn't been invited. Not even by Jack.

He wasn't smart enough. He wasn't trained. He wasn't good enough.

He was Logan Echolls- surfer boy. Nothing else. Nothing useful.

It hurt. In fact it hurt more than he was willing to admit. He kept it quiet, and he kept it to himself, but sometimes, when Jack wasn't looking, he found his eyes were just a little damp and that his chest ached. Jack would smile that little smile, and Logan would turn away to hide how angry it made him, and how hurt he was that he'd been left behind. That the other man hadn't thought of him or asked him along. That he hadn't made a case for him or found a way to involve him.

It made him so angry.

Today he'd gone to the office, two cups of coffee in his hands and every intention of making nice- but when he'd reached the door, he'd seen Jack's face- that smile, and he'd known he couldn't go in there. Not without pouring the coffee in the smug bastard's lap.

When he finally made his way home, he found himself still boiling over with anger, and after taking it out on the wall until his knuckles ached and bled- he'd known what he needed to do. He couldn't be here, he couldn't do this anymore. He'd packed a bag, grabbed a gun, and taken some of his personal things. He didn't want to be here- he didn't want to sit in Jack's shadow anymore.

He pulled his necklace off, the tiny shells choking him as he tried to calm down. He left the necklace on the pillow, beside a note that simply said. I'll be back eventually. I love you. It didn't occur to him that it might be a bit cryptic or worrying. He just wanted to go.

He left Linus behind and set off, not realizing that the moment he was gone, the dog would eat the note he'd left for Jack, leaving the other man no explanation as to what had happened.

--- --- ---

The second island wasn't so scary anymore, and he had no trouble making his way over and setting up a small campsite. He built a tent and a fire- hell he even managed to catch a few fish. By the second night he'd even constructed a decent shelter, since he wasn't sure how long he intended to stay.

The third day went less well. He'd gotten bold and decided to try and take on a shark- which had, unfortunately, ended with one of the baby sharks trying to remove his arm. He bandaged it well, but he knew it would make fishing that much harder.

By the forth, he was missing Jack- but he still wasn't ready to go home. His chest still ached, and he still felt like he was nothing. Still just a stupid surfer boy. The only difference now was the fact that he was a stupid surfer boy who'd run away.

"You should go to the clinic when we get back," Jack said. "Do you...I can help you clean it out if you want," he added, no pressure to it. He was working hard not to coddle the younger man.

"I'm not going to the clinic," Logan replied. "...You can help though. That would be good. Thanks."

If it had really bad then Logan would have likely bled out, or had a nasty infection by now. Sharks were nothing to mess with but if he got away then he was fine and Jack needed to quell his panic.

"We should make up a fire so I can see what I'm doing," he said, moving to sit up. "It's been a long time since I bandaged you up. I don't think I can do it in the dark."

"I have a fire," Logan said, pointing at the small blaze. "What's wrong with the one I built?"

"A big fire. Bigger. I...I can't see in the dark like I used to," Jack said quietly. "It's not your fire. It's fine for, oh, nevermind."

He should have brought a flashlight. He should have brought a lot of things. He didn't like to admit his shortcomings, how he couldn't see as well in the twilight or the fact that glasses made reading easier.

"fine, alright, so let's build a better fire," Logan offered, getting up and moving to start gathering wood.

He was surprised by Jack's confession, but careful not to say anything about it. He could tell it was a sore spot, and he wouldn't prod at it.

Jack let Logan gather the wood. He was busy looking through the younger man's things to find what he could for a clean bandage and some fresh water. There wasn't much else to be done for a wound out her than all that. Jack was nervous about what he'd see when the bandage came off.

Logan built the fire up, and then smiled as he headed back over. "That okay?" he asked.

He wet his lips and started to remove the dressing. "It's not as bad as it looks," he promised. "It's just deep."

Jack braced himself and he still winced when he saw it. Logan was right, though...it wasn't bad. And as far as he could tell it didn't look like it was infected. It could have done with a stitch but it was much too late for that now.

"That looks...terrible," he said, pouring some water over a bit of cloth and dabbing at the wound to clean it. "You're going to have so many scars. You should start working on stories that make you sound like a complete badass. You'd get all the girls."

"It might not scar," Logan argued wih a frown. "The bullet didn't leave that much of a scar," he pointed out, hissing a little as Jack cleaned him up.

"Badass scar," Jack insisted, smiling a little bit. He was careful, working fast in the heat of the fire before the flames died down and stole his light.

"It'll be fine. I'm just teasing," he said. "It's really not bad. Let's get this covered up again."

Logan snorted a little and pressed closer, moving so Jack could easily bandage the wound for him.

"You know I just keep getting hurt because you love scars so much," he teased softly.

"I do like your scars," Jack admitted, his voice low...like it was a secret or something. Jack had always loved Logan's scars. Been fascinated with them. And the new ones were a constant source of wonder. Jack had a few of his own but they didn't interest him. He liked Logan's.

"There," he said as he tied off the bandage. "Not too tight, right? It should do all right until we get home and I can do it up properly."

"It's good- it's better," Logan nodded. "Thanks," he added, leaning in and kissing the other man softly.

Jack hummed soft approval as he kissed Logan back. He couldn't help but smile. This was good, close by a fire, the stars overhead. This was very good. Jack reached for Logan to keep him close as he enjoyed the soft press of lips and the warm feathering of breath.

"I missed you," he admitted quietly. "I really missed you."

"I've been going out of my mind. Not having you, not knowing where you were...out of my damn mind," Jack replied. "I missed you. I miss you whenever you go off without me."

"Sometimes I just need to be alone," Logan shrugged. "I think better when I'm alone."

"I know. So do I sometimes," Jack replied. "I get it, I do. I was just..."

He didn't want to tell Logan just how out of his mind he'd really been.

"I know," Logan replied softly. "I really am sorry, okay? I didn't mean to freak you out. That wasn't what i was trying to do."

Jack nodded and leaned in to kiss Logan again. Sometimes he just didn't have the words to say what he was feeling and so he relied on touching and kissing to try to convey how deeply he felt about something. About Logan. About being in love.

"I love you," Logan whispered. "I love you, you know that right? Even when it's all fucked up... i love you."

"I know. I know you do. I love you, too," Jack replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll be a better man for you Logan. I promise. I really promise."

"You're already a good man," Logan assured him quietly. "That's not something you need to be better at."

He pressed his forehead against Logan's and simply breathed for a moment.

"You're a good man, too," he said softly. "We have to find a way to work, Logan. I'm so tired of arguing. We can fix it, right? We have to fix it before we have a family."
